But even if that were true, a social safety net is a pragmatic way to keep people from the desperation that cuts them off from mainstream society. Like even if my unemployed neighbor is in fact a lazy idiot, I'd still rather pay for AFDC than have him mugging me. And from Walmart's perspective, it's better to pay a little more taxes, but keep people from the desperation that gives rise to effective labor movements.
